to our early spring edition of the Juniors. Well, the first track and field match is less than three weeks away, so perhaps this is a chance to explain especially to many of our new athletes something about the season ahead.

The club has entered two leagues this season namely the National Young Athletes League (NYAL) and the Wessex Young Athletes League (WYAL). The first competition caters for athletes (boys and girls) in the U13, 15 and 17 age groups.
We are in Southern Division Two (South West) with four other clubs (see www.natyal.co.uk for more details). There are four rounds with clubs competing against each other.
The WYAL is an 18 team competition split into three matches of six teams competing over four rounds. Ages are U11s (Quadkids), U13, 15,17s and 20s (see www.wessexleaguetandf.co.uk for more details).
In both competitions there are two track and field events per discipline (A and B). Team points are scored according to placing. The host club normally organises the event with participating clubs supplying track and field officials as necessary. It is therefore important that we support these meetings as much as possible, not only with athletes but officials as well. Any help such as holding a tape in the field would be very much appreciated. Dave is our team manager, who selects the team based on the premise that each athlete can compete in three events and a relay.
Another aspect of our involvement is the county championships where athletes compete as individuals against other athletes in Hampshire. Success in this competition can lead to county representation etc.
The schools also operate their own district, county and national championships where athletes may represent their schools, district and county. There are also inter school competitions during the season (summer term).
The club does not expect athletes to compete in events they are not familiar with or trained for. However it is worth considering after speaking to your coach or parents first.
The summer fixture list can be found here.
Best of luck for the season.
