Well the track and field season as far as we are concerned is just about over. Many of you will be no doubt enjoying your summer holidays with only the odd open meeting available in August and September. We had a good season with just missing out on promotion in the Young Athletes League and giving our newly emerging under thirteen’s plenty of competition in the Wessex Young Athletes League. So a big well done to everyone who supported the club throughout the season.
Wessex League
The fixture matrix contrived to send us twice to Oxford in July. Fortunately the weather on both occasions was kind to us and both matches were most enjoyable. Our under thirteen boys and girls were particularly successful in both matches achieving plenty of wins.
Final League Table. 1 Isle of Wight 24 pts, 2 Team Southampton 23, 3 Marlborough 22, 4 Oxford City 19, 5 Slough Juniors, Portsmouth & Team Kennet 17, 8 Poole AC 15, 9 Woking 15 10 Camberley 14.5, 11 Bournemouth 14, 12 Andover 12.5, 13 Basingstoke 11, 14 New Forest Juniors & Goring and Wallingford 9, 16 Poole Runners 7, 17 Winchester 5 and 18 Weymouth 4
National Young Athletes League.
Our final league match was at Salisbury on July 20th. Unfortunately we just missed out on promotion (same as last year) by one place. However we had many good individual results and with a slightly bigger team we would have no doubt secured promotion.
Final League Table. 1 Winchester 19, 2 Salisbury/Bath 15, 3 New Forest Juniors 13, 4 Havant 9 and 5 Fleet 4.
Chrissy Parsons
Chrissy again represented Hampshire Schools at the English Schools Championships in Gateshead where she did the high jump. Despite carrying an injury all season she took bronze. Another one of our former athletes until this year, Rory Constable also took bronze in the triple jump. Another big well done to them both.
Coaching Courses
The next local level one course is on October 11th at Winchester. We have had some volunteers come forward. More are always welcome. If you know of someone interested please let the club know. Coaches (and officials) are the back bone of the club. Without them we wouldn’t be able to compete at our present level.
Southern Road Relays
We normally enter at least one team in the above event which is held on Sunday 28th September at Aldershot. 3 to a team (4 for boys). Tim will be making up the teams shortly, if you are interested please let Tim know as soon as possible.
Schools
The New Forest Schools Y5&6 teams were first and third in the inaugural Hampshire Championships. Many of these young athletes are either with the club or are considering joining. A great result for the New Forest Schools Partnership and the club.
Under Eleven’s
Pete will be leaving the group when he goes off to university in September. He has done a fantastic job and I’m sure everyone would like to thank him and wish him all the best for the future. Another one of our young athletes, Jess will taking over the group helped by at least one other. I’m sure the transition will be smooth and seamless thanks to Pete.
Hampshire Cross Country League
Here are the dates and venues for the above. 11/10 Farley Mount, 8/11 Goodwood, 6/12 Overton, 3/1/09 Reading, 14/2/09 Salisbury. We will not be entering the Wessex Cross Country League this season mainly due to excessive travelling. The County XC Champs will be on Saturday 10th January probably at Dibden Enclosure.
Winter Training
The club will commence its winter training at Noadswood School on Tuesday 9th September. It is also planned that the sprint group will also train at Noadswood School on Thursdays as well. Dave will information the group nearer to the time.
