April 2007

Last saturday a few of our athletes competed in the Bournemouth Open medal meeting.
In extremely windy conditions. which just happened to be in the face on the home straight, four medals were awarded to Christina Parsons and Hayley Platt.

Chrisy picked up Gold in High jump (1.60m), Gold in Shot Putt (8.27m) and Silver in 200m (28.2sec). Hayley picked up a Bronze in Long Jump (4.74m), a personal best on the day.

Hayley was 4th placed in 100m (14.4). Sam Parsons was 5th in 200m (31.4).

In the under 11's age group, Kieron Parsons competed in both 75m and 150m, which proved a bit on the tough side heading into a strong wind.

Next open medal meeting at Bournemouth is Sunday 22nd April. All age groups are able to compete. Hopefully see a few more of our athletes there.

Hi All.

Just a quick reminder to say we have two cross countries coming up at Canford Park, Wimborne on Saturday 10th February (Hants League). First race 12:00. Reasonable course, well worth the short journey. The next day there is a Wessex XC fixture at Old Sarum, Salisbury. Very good course. Again, well worth the trip. First race 1245 (U11s).

By all means run both if you wish. I'll settle for at least one however.

I'll send more details next week. The weather will be fine!!!

Good opportunity to get a race in before the schools champs.

Summer Training

After a lot of thought at committee and coach level, it has been decided to change our approach to this group of athletes. Before I try and explain how the new system will work, I feel we need to look back at what as a club we have done in the past with this group.

Traditionally the club has structured club athletes in age groups, to a certain degree, and moved them though when they have reached U13, U15. Not always with the best interest of the athletes, but to suit our structure.

We have in the past tried to develop coaches to work with this demanding age group and failed for various reasons, last year Gary took on the age group on a rotational basis, and because the lack of coaches and their availability, this system failed the athletes for several reasons, why try and make an athlete train endurance when they have no interest in this discipline, or throws, jumps or sprints.

On occasions last year several athletes decided not to train on Tuesdays because of this training structure. Surely we should be helping athletes to come along and enjoy training nights, develop and not put them off.

How do we help athletes to develop as individuals and keep their interest in our sport, I think maybe the answer is to let them choose the type of training that suits them best as athletes.

Once they have decided on their pathway, whether it be endurance, sprints, hurdles, throws, jumps or multi-discipline with perhaps some minor guidance from the coaching staff, then we should try to facilitate this.

So summer training …

The intension is to allow all age groups to experience every discipline if they so wish.

How do we achieve this …

The idea is to have coaches available to coach throws, jumps, sprints, and endurance on a Tuesday night.

As athletes move from Mandy’s group into the U13 age bracket they will have a choice on what type of training suits them best, along with the older ages.

The idea is to allow for athletes to train for 30minutes at one discipline and rotate around if they want too, if they decide to stick with the one discipline then that’s fine, they spend the whole session there.

We must structure this so as athletes change over at a certain time and not have athletes wandering from group to group at different times. The suggestion would be to blow a whistle at say 7.30 and rotate around then.

This type of system will have its drawbacks and its advantages, coaches could be trying to train athletes at different development stages and this will need to be looked at in more detail once the system gets up and running.

One of the benefits as I see it is, younger athletes will look up to older athletes and may want to aspire to be like them, this could encourage the younger athletes to enter competition and compete at club level, which in the past has been lacking.

Traditionally Thursday nights are down on numbers, but if coaches are about then, the same system could be used.

First we need commitment from coaches to take sessions on a regular basis, we all lead busy lives and the club are not expecting coaches to attend every session. We could maybe look at an availability roster where coaches fill this in on a monthly or weekly basis.

We have a number of level 1 coaches who should be looking to develop their own coaching skills and it will be the responsibility of the more experienced coaches to help facilitate this.

What we don’t want is for these coaches to feel out of their depth, so support needs to be given to these coaches. Now this might mean shadowing or setting sessions for the level 1’s to coach. As competency grows the need for shadowing will diminish.

We need to encourage parents to help out, raking the pit, rolling back shots, re-fitting the high jump bar, and so on. This may lead to them taking a coaching course in the future.

As yet nothing has been finalised as to who will be coaching what and when. When we have commitment from coaches we can then decide on who wants to coach what or rotate around.

The Birmingham Grand Prix

Hi,
An opportunity that doesn't come around too often. The Birmingham Grand Prix which is the premier event of the winter indoor series (televised on BBC1) happens to be on Saturday 18th February, on the next day Midland counties athletic association are holding an open meeting at the same venue, The National Indoor Arena.

I have attached an entry form (PDF) for the Open meeting (closing date for entries 23rd January). This is an ideal chance to watch the athletes that you only see on the TV, perform or not as the case may be, and then race on the same track the next day.

I know this will not appeal to everyone and there is a cost implication. £15.00 per adult, £10.00 for under16's, Family ticket £40.00 2 x adults + 2 x children. Plus the cost of an overnight stay.

I am not intending to take a mini-bus, too much hassle, and because of the the age of the athletes from our group, I will insist any child wishing to come along will need to be accompanied by a parent or friend of the family.

We can look at the specifics later. What I need to know is, is there any interest? You may just want to compete on the Sunday or just watch on the Saturday? There are several options.

Let me know asap.
